GMAT Reading Comprehension Tips

Have a look at the first two questions before you start reading the passage. This can help you read more actively and keep in mind the kind of information you require.

The answer to a question can be present anywhere in the passage. So do not decide and mark the answer unless you are sure after having gone through the whole document.

Keep a pencil and an extra paper for rough work. While you read, jot down the important points in the passage. This will help you to refer to the appropriate paragraph to find answer to any question. Don’t focus on minute details, instead note it in this list along with the paragraph where it occur.

Now don’t forget to look at the options with an eye to eliminate those which are contrary to any information given in the passage.

If there is an option(s), the information of which is not in the passage, most probably it is one of the wrong answers which you can reject. But beware, you must not reject an option in this way until and unless you have read the whole passage properly.

How to do well in GMAT Sentence Correction

First of all, brush up your basic Grammar concepts. Many of the MBA aspirants would have learned British English from the very beginning. The major difference in British and American English lies in the pronunciation, vocabulary, spellings and idioms. Start your grammar preparation with Manhattan Sentence Correction book. This book is my favorite. Focus on grammar and try to finish off the book in about 15-20 days. Read the basic stuff thoroughly before solving the exercises. The explanation in this book is completely justified so that you can understand the logic behind every solution. Don’t rush to finish the book. You should be understanding your root problems while reading this book and try to clear all your doubts.

Next start with the GMAC Official Guide. You can completely solve the entire book in around 15 days. So stay tuned and solve all the problems before you get exhausted or bored. Utilize the common errors section of these books. Work on your weaknesses and work on idioms. Knowing and being familiar with idioms is very important to crack the GMAT. All the best………

Did you know that you need to score more than 700 to be successful in GMAT? Yes, you can expect higher chances of your admission in a good B-school if your score is above 700. A score of 700+ is achievable with the right attitude and effort. The one who stays organized while solving the test is the one who wins.

Improve your English Vocabulary for GMAT

You can definitely improve your vocabulary with a little effort. The most important  key here is your attitude. Your attitude should be playful. Don’t take words too seriously because they are not worth it. Just play with them and you can master them. Here are a few tips:

Reading helps you learn new words and the article you read provides you the context of word usage. Reading more often will also improve your reading comprehension skills.

 

Read more on the computer and Use a dictionary program:

GMAT is a CAT (Computer Adaptive Test). So you need to read more and more on your PC. While doing so use WordWeb Online dictionary to look for meanings of words. I have it installed on my PC and I just have to press Ctrl + Right Click on the word to get the meaning, synonyms, antonyms and pronunciation. You can also use America Online or other internet services that have dictionaries and thesauruses on their tool bars.

Read what interests you:

Have you been putting stress on reading topics that you hate or dislike just to be better at it? Just stop if you are doing so. Why not keep the uninteresting topics for the actual GMAT if they somehow become a part of the test? For practicing, read your favorite topics and subjects. Read novels. Download the e-version of novels. Read nine to ten interesting topics for one uninteresting topic. You will notice the difference because you will learn more.

 

Get the feel of the word you have newly learnt:

Dictionaries usually have word usage also. You can also search the web for more examples. Use a word phrase (Example: word + preposition) within double quotes to search Google and subsequently find different word usages.

Solve Word puzzles:

Use word puzzles from newspapers, magazines and online programs and solve it.

Take tests:

Finally, testing yourself is very important. The more you take the test seriously, the more likely you are to remember word meanings after checking your mistakes in the test.
